Legacies

By making a Will a person makes things easier for those they leave, since the Executors appointed by the Will ensure that one’s wishes are carried out. If you have not yet made a Will, you would be well advised to consult a solicitor. If you have already made a Will, you could amend it by a simple document called a codicil.

Legacy: A Specific Bequest

“I give or bequeath to Kidney Research Northwest of the Cancer Research Centre, 200 London Road, Liverpool, L3 9TA the sum of £……. for the general charitable purposes of the said Association. I declare that the said sum shall be paid free of tax and that the receipt of the Treasurer or other authorised officer shall be sufficient discharge thereof”.

Residuary Bequests

“I give the whole of my Estate not otherwise disposed of by this my Will (subject to and after payment of my funeral and testamentary expenses) to Kidney Research Northwest of the Cancer Research Centre, 200 London Road, Liverpool, L3 9TA for the general purposes of the said Association and I declare that the receipt of the Treasurer or other authorised officer will be sufficient discharge thereof”.

A variation of a residuary bequest, sometimes called reversionary legacy, would leave an estate or a share in an estate to Kidney Research Northwest for Kidney Research after the death of a dependant.

Inheritance Tax

Gifts to Kidney Research Northwest and other registered charities are entirely free of Inheritance Tax whether they are made during the lifetime of the donor or by Will. Your solicitor will be able to explain to you the ways in which either a lifetime gift or a legacy could reduce the amount of Inheritance Tax which would otherwise be payable on your Estate.

General Information

If you wish either to leave part of your Estate to the Association or to amend your existing Will by adding a codicil, then we would recommend you consult your own solicitor.
